Heavy frost buildup around a refrigerator evaporator during a Denver refrigerator repair

Heavy ice around the evaporator area was blocking airflow and preventing normal temperature control.

ApplianceRefrigerator / freezer
Customer complaintFresh-food section warm, frost or ice visible
Diagnostic findingEvaporator airflow restricted by heavy frost buildup
OutcomeDefrost system, fan, drain, and sensor circuit evaluated

Why the refrigerator can feel warm

Cold air is produced at the evaporator and circulated by a fan. When the coil becomes encased in ice, air cannot move through the passages even though the compressor may continue running.

Possible causes

The root cause can be a failed defrost heater, open defrost thermostat, faulty thermistor, control-board problem, weak evaporator fan, blocked drain, or an air leak that introduces excess moisture.

Why manual defrost is temporary

Unplugging the refrigerator long enough to melt the ice may restore cooling briefly, but the frost will return unless the failed component or airflow problem is corrected.
