Oven Repair by Type & Brand
Gas, electric, and dual-fuel ranges have different failure modes — and premium brands have unique parts that require specialized knowledge.
Gas vs. Electric vs. Dual-Fuel Ranges
Gas ranges fail most often at the burner igniter (spark electrode + igniter switch) and the oven igniter (glow bar). The oven igniter is a carbon rod that glows red-hot to ignite the gas — when it weakens after 5–8 years, the oven takes 10+ minutes to preheat or won't light at all.
Electric ranges fail most often at the bake element (bottom of oven cavity) and the broil element (top). These are visible failures — you'll often see a charred spot or crack on the element. Replacement is straightforward and same-day. Control board failures are the next most common electric issue.
Dual-fuel ranges (gas cooktop + electric oven) combine both failure modes. Thermador, Viking, and Wolf dual-fuel models are the most common dual-fuel repairs. If your range has an induction cooktop, see our Cooktop Repair page for induction-specific information.
Thermador Range & Oven Repair (PRD / PRG / PCG Series)
Thermador PRD (dual-fuel) and PRG (gas) ranges are high-revenue, high-complexity repairs. The most common Thermador failure: igniter failure at 7–10 years — the glow-bar igniter weakens and the oven takes forever to preheat. Thermador's ExtraLow simmer feature uses an additional solenoid valve that fails independently of the main valve, causing one or two burners to lose simmer capability. These parts are available — the most common igniter sizes are stocked. Thermador oven repairs almost always make financial sense — these ranges cost $3,000–$8,000 new.
Viking Range Repair (VGSC / VDSC Dual-Fuel)
Viking ranges are workhorses built for heavy use. The VGSC (gas) and VDSC (dual-fuel) are the most common Viking models Serviced in Denver. Most common failures: hot surface igniter for the oven cavity, and the spark module controlling burner ignition. Viking spark modules control all burners — when the module fails, all burners click continuously or none will ignite. Viking parts have good availability and these ranges warrant repair well past 15 years of age.
Wolf Range Repair (Dual-Fuel & Gas)
Wolf dual-fuel ranges carry a premium price tag ($5,000–$15,000) and are designed to last 20+ years. Common Wolf repairs: spark electrode replacement (burner ignition), door seal replacement (the oven door seal on Wolf is a thick gasket that compresses and loses its seal over time), and convection fan motor failures. A $200 repair on a 12-year-old Wolf is never even a question — repair is always the right answer on these machines.
GE, Whirlpool, Samsung & LG Range Repair
GE Profile and standard GE ranges represent the highest-volume oven repairs. Most common: bake element burnout and control board failures. Whirlpool and KitchenAid share a platform — identical repairs. Samsung NE/NX ranges are increasingly common in Denver new construction; most common issue is the bake element and control board. For wall ovens or cooktop-only repairs, see our dedicated Cooktop Repair page.

Range & Oven Lifespan: Should You Repair or Replace?
Gas ranges average 15 years; electric ranges 13 years. Premium ranges (Thermador, Viking, Wolf) regularly reach 20–25 years with proper service. For standard brands, a repair under $250 on a machine under 10 years old is almost always worth it. For premium brands, repair is almost always the right call even on 15-year-old machines — replacement cost is 10–30× the repair cost. Honest guidance is provided at diagnosis if the repair doesn't make sense.
