Definition

The user interface board (UI board or display board) is the front-panel circuit board that contains the buttons, display, and indicator LEDs of an appliance. It detects user input and shows status information, then communicates with the main control board over a ribbon cable or low-voltage bus. A failed UI board is one of the most common reasons a modern appliance becomes unresponsive even though the rest of it works fine.

What It Does

When you touch a button or capacitive panel, the UI board's microcontroller reads the input, debounces it, and sends a digital command to the main board. It also receives status messages from the main board (cycle time remaining, error codes, sensor readings) and drives the display segments or LCD. On modern appliances the UI is often a separate, replaceable board because button wear and display failures are common.

Where It’s Located

Behind the front control panel. Refrigerator: in the upper door or top dispenser assembly. Washer/dryer: in the control console at the top front. Dishwasher: in the top of the door. Range: behind the bezel at the back of the cooktop or in the front of the oven. Brand examples: Samsung DA92- and DA97- series UI boards; LG EBR-series; Whirlpool WPW10-series.

Common Failure Signs

  • Dead pixels or missing segments on the display
  • Buttons unresponsive while the appliance otherwise has power
  • Random key presses or ghost touches
  • Display flickers or shows scrambled characters
  • Some buttons work, others do not

Typical Replacement Cost

$220–$420 including parts and labor. UI boards run $80–$280 in parts. Many models pair the UI to the main board, so the UI board sometimes needs to be model- and main-board-specific.

DIY vs Pro

Moderate DIY on most washers and dryers — the console pops open and a single ribbon cable connects the UI to the main board. Dishwasher and refrigerator UI boards involve more disassembly. Book refrigerator repair or other appropriate service.
