Definition
A control board (sometimes called a PCB or electronic control) is a printed circuit board with a microcontroller that runs the operation of an appliance. It reads inputs from sensors and the user interface, then switches power to motors, heaters, valves, and pumps at the right times. Modern appliances often have two boards: a main control board and a user-interface board.
What It Does
The board contains a microcontroller chip, voltage regulators, relays (or triacs) that switch high-voltage loads on and off, and connectors that link to every sensor and actuator in the appliance. When you press a button, the user interface board sends a digital signal to the main board, which then executes the cycle — opening the inlet valve, starting the motor, energizing the heater, monitoring temperature sensors, and so on. Modern boards also store error codes and run self-diagnostics.
Where It’s Located
Varies by appliance. Refrigerator: back of the cabinet behind a service panel, or in the top hinge cover. Washer: top rear (front-loader) or under the control console. Dishwasher: in the door panel or under the kickplate. Range: behind the control console. Brand examples: Whirlpool W10310240 series, Samsung DA92-, LG EBR series.
Common Failure Signs
- Appliance does not respond to any button press
- Random error codes that change between cycles
- Components fail to activate at the right time (heater stays off, fan never starts)
- Display shows scrambled characters or stays blank
- Burn marks or bulged capacitors visible on the board itself
Typical Replacement Cost
$220–$520 including parts and labor. Boards range widely: $90 for a simple older Whirlpool refrigerator board, $400+ for a Samsung French-door or LG smart appliance board. Whenever possible, connectors, harnesses, and sensors are checked first — sometimes a $25 sensor solves what looks like a $350 board problem.
DIY vs Pro
Pro recommended. The replacement itself is straightforward (unplug, swap, plug in) but diagnosing that the board is actually the failure is the hard part. Boards are non-returnable in most cases, so a wrong call is expensive. Book refrigerator repair or your relevant service for proper diagnosis.
