Definition
The drum bearing is the sealed bearing assembly that supports the spinning drum of a washer or dryer. In front-load washers it sits in the center of the outer tub and carries the full weight of wet laundry at spin speeds up to 1,400 RPM. Worn drum bearings produce loud grinding or roaring noises and eventually cause the drum to wobble, leak, or seize.
What It Does
The drum rotates on a shaft that passes through one or two sealed ball bearings. These bearings carry the radial and thrust loads created by the laundry inside the spinning drum, especially during high-speed spin cycles when an unbalanced wet load can apply tremendous force. A rubber tub seal sits in front of the bearings to keep water out — when that seal fails, water reaches the bearings and corrodes them, leading to the loud roaring noise.
Where It’s Located
Front-load washer: pressed into the center of the rear outer tub. Top-load washer (older Whirlpool/Kenmore direct-drive): in the transmission. Dryer: rear drum bearing on the back wall (Whirlpool felt seal and ball/socket; Samsung rear roller bearings). Brand examples: Samsung WF-series and LG WM-series front-loaders both use sealed double-bearing assemblies that are not user-serviceable on most models.
Common Failure Signs
- Loud roaring or airplane-takeoff sound during spin cycle
- Grinding or rumbling that gets louder over weeks
- Drum wobbles when you grab it and rock it side-to-side (washer)
- Rust-colored streaks on the rear of the drum from corroded bearings
- Water leaking from the bottom rear of a front-load washer
Typical Replacement Cost
$380–$650 including parts and labor for a dryer; $550–$900 for a front-load washer because the entire outer tub must be split or replaced. On many Samsung and LG front-loaders the outer tub is sealed and must be replaced as a unit, making the repair $700–$1,100 — at which point repair-or-replace is a real conversation.
DIY vs Pro
Pro recommended. Dryer drum bearings are moderate DIY (1–2 hours). Front-load washer bearings are an advanced repair — the entire machine has to come apart, the tub split, and the bearings pressed in and out. This repair is done regularly, with a straight repair-or-replace recommendation provided before starting. Book washing machine repair.
