Definition
The door boot seal (also called the door gasket or bellows) is the large flexible rubber boot that surrounds the door opening of a front-load washer. It creates a watertight seal between the door and the outer tub during wash and spin cycles. Over years of use the rubber tears, develops mold, or springs leaks — and replacing it is one of the most common front-load washer repairs.
What It Does
The boot bridges the gap between the rigid door frame at the front of the cabinet and the spinning outer tub inside the machine. Two large clamps (spring or band style) hold it firmly to each surface. The boot must flex constantly as the tub vibrates and as the drum spins, while keeping every drop of water sealed in. It also includes drain holes at the bottom that route residual water back into the tub.
Where It’s Located
Visible the moment you open the front-load washer door — it is the rubber accordion-like seal that frames the door opening. Brand examples: Samsung WF45 series uses DC97-16140 series boots; LG WM-series uses MDS47123604; Whirlpool Duet uses W10381562. Each is brand-specific and many are model-specific.
Common Failure Signs
- Water leaking from the front of the washer onto the floor during the wash cycle
- Visible tear, slit, or crack on the rubber boot
- Black mold buildup in the folds of the boot (not yet leaking but a sign of age)
- Foul, musty smell from the washer that cleaning will not remove
- Standing water in the boot folds after every cycle
Typical Replacement Cost
$280–$480 including parts and labor. OEM boots run $90–$220 in parts, and replacement takes 1.5–2 hours because the front panel and door must come off and the spring clamps are awkward to install correctly.
DIY vs Pro
Advanced DIY or pro. The replacement is tedious — the inner spring clamp in particular is difficult to seat without a special tool. These are done regularly — the specialized clamp tool is stocked on the truck. Book washing machine repair for an honest quote.
