Definition
The water inlet valve is an electrically operated solenoid valve that connects an appliance to the home's water supply. When the control board signals it, the valve opens and water flows into the washer, dishwasher, or refrigerator. When the board removes power, the valve closes and stops the flow. A failed inlet valve either prevents the appliance from filling or causes it to overfill.
What It Does
The valve body contains one or more solenoid coils. When 120 V AC is applied to a coil, a magnetic field pulls a small armature back and lifts a rubber diaphragm off a port. Household water pressure (typically 40–80 PSI) does the rest of the work, pushing water through the open port and into the appliance. Mesh screens at the inlet ports filter out debris before water enters the valve. The valve is binary — fully open or fully closed.
Where It’s Located
Washer: back of the cabinet where the hot and cold hoses screw on. Dishwasher: lower-left corner inside the kick-plate access. Refrigerator: bottom-rear of the unit where the 1/4-inch supply line connects (feeds the icemaker and water dispenser). Brand examples: Samsung washers use DC62-30314 series; Whirlpool dishwashers use W10872255.
Common Failure Signs
- Washer error: Samsung 4E/4C, LG IE, Whirlpool F8E1 (no fill or slow fill)
- Dishwasher does not fill or fills very slowly
- Refrigerator icemaker has stopped making ice but water dispenser still works (or vice versa)
- Continuous slow leak from the back of the appliance
- Appliance fills even when unplugged (mechanically stuck open — rare but serious)
Typical Replacement Cost
$140–$220 including parts and labor. The valve itself is $40–$95. Before condemning the valve, supply hoses, screens, and inlet pressure is adequate — about 40% of "failed valves" are actually clogged screens.
DIY vs Pro
DIY-friendly on washers (back of cabinet, 4 screws, two wires). Slightly harder on dishwashers and fridges because the valve is buried. Service covers the diagnosis in the Samsung 4E error guide in detail. Book washer repair if hoses and screens check out.
