Definition

A glow bar igniter (also called a glow-coil or hot-surface igniter on ovens) is a small ceramic-bodied silicon carbide rod that glows bright orange when energized. In a gas oven or gas dryer, it serves two functions at once: it heats up enough to ignite gas, and its decreasing electrical resistance signals the gas safety valve to open. When the igniter weakens, the burner will not light because the valve will not open.

What It Does

When the oven or dryer calls for heat, 120 V is applied to the igniter, which draws about 3–4 amps and heats to roughly 1,800°F. As it heats, its resistance drops and current flow increases. Once current exceeds the threshold (typically 3.0 amps), a bimetal safety valve opens and gas flows past the glowing igniter, which ignites it. A weakened igniter glows but never draws enough current to open the valve, so the burner never lights even though the igniter looks fine.

Where It’s Located

Gas oven: directly above the burner tube at the back of the oven cavity floor, behind the flame spreader. Gas dryer: on the burner assembly near the gas valve. Brand examples: Whirlpool/Kenmore/Maytag use the W10918546 or 8053344 series; Samsung gas dryers use DC47-00019A; LG uses 5304523038.

Common Failure Signs

  • Gas oven won't heat — igniter glows but burner never ignites
  • Gas dryer runs but tumbles without heat
  • You hear gas hissing briefly then stopping (valve opened then safety closed)
  • Igniter glows visibly but takes longer than 90 seconds to ignite
  • Igniter is cracked or visibly broken on inspection

Typical Replacement Cost

$180–$320 including parts and labor. The igniter is $35–$90. Current draw is always tested with a clamp meter before condemning the igniter — a weak igniter that still glows is the most common diagnostic miss for homeowners.

DIY vs Pro

DIY for confident owners. The igniter is held by 1–2 screws and connects with ceramic-shielded leads. Always shut off gas at the appliance shutoff valve before working. If you would rather have it done correctly the first time, book oven repair or dryer repair.
