Definition
The evaporator fan is the small motorized fan mounted directly behind the rear wall of the freezer compartment. It pulls cold air across the evaporator coil and pushes it through ducts into both the freezer and fresh-food sections. Without this fan, the freezer may stay cold but the refrigerator side warms up because no cold air can move into it.
What It Does
When the compressor runs, the evaporator coil gets very cold but the cold air has to be physically moved to where food is stored. The evaporator fan spins anywhere from 1,200 to 2,400 RPM, drawing warm cabinet air across the cold coil. As that air gives up its heat, the resulting cold air is distributed through ducting to the freezer first, then a portion is diverted (sometimes via a damper) into the refrigerator section. The fan typically runs whenever the compressor runs.
Where It’s Located
Behind the rear panel inside the freezer compartment on top- and bottom-freezer models. On French-door refrigerators (Samsung RF, LG LFXS, Whirlpool WRF series), the fan sits behind the freezer drawer back wall. Side-by-side models place it behind the freezer rear panel near the top.
Common Failure Signs
- Freezer is cold but the refrigerator section is warm
- Loud chirping, squealing, or grinding noise from the back of the freezer
- Noise that stops when you open the freezer door (door switch cuts power to fan)
- Ice buildup on the rear freezer wall combined with poor cooling
- Fan blade visible but not spinning when freezer door is opened with the door switch held in
Typical Replacement Cost
$180–$320 including parts and labor. The fan motor itself runs $40–$120 depending on brand; the rest is labor and a service call. Genuine OEM motors are recommended — aftermarket motors often fail within 12 months on Samsung and LG units.
DIY vs Pro
DIY possible for handy owners on top-freezer Whirlpool, GE, and Frigidaire units — about 30 minutes with a nut driver. French-door and side-by-side models require disassembling the freezer interior, which is fiddly. If you are not comfortable working in tight spaces or with electrical connectors, call for refrigerator repair.
