Definition
The circulation pump is the term used by European brands (Bosch, Miele, Asko) and many newer dishwashers for the main pump that moves water through the spray arms during wash and rinse cycles. It is functionally the same as the wash pump on American-style dishwashers. The term "circulation" emphasizes that the same water is recirculated continuously through the cycle, not pumped to drain.
What It Does
After fill, the circulation pump activates and pulls water from the sump, pressurizes it through an impeller, and pushes it up through internal manifolds to the upper, middle, and lower spray arms. During each phase (prewash, main wash, rinses) the same volume of water (about 1–1.5 gallons in newer models) is circulated repeatedly. The pump runs nearly the entire cycle except during fill, drain, and dry phases. Modern circulation pumps use brushless DC motors with sensors for variable speed and noise control.
Where It’s Located
Under the tub at the center of the dishwasher base, often integrated with the sump and filter housing. Brand examples: Bosch SHE/SHX-series use 00755078; Miele uses 06366080; Samsung DW80 series uses DD81-01262A; LG LDF-series uses 5859DD9001A.
Common Failure Signs
- Dishes left dirty or with food residue after every cycle
- Loud humming or grinding noise from the bottom of the dishwasher
- Spray arms not spinning fully
- Cycle takes much longer than usual
- Error codes: Bosch E09 or E24, Samsung 9E, Miele F18
Typical Replacement Cost
$300–$560 including parts and labor. Bosch circulation pumps are $180–$340 in parts; Miele parts run higher. On Bosch SHE/SHX series the pump is usually integrated with the heater, so a heater failure can sometimes drive a whole-pump replacement.
DIY vs Pro
Pro repair. Bosch and Miele dishwashers in particular have tightly integrated pump/heater/sump modules. The diagnosis and replacement require pulling the dishwasher, laying it on its back, and using brand-specific tools. Book dishwasher repair.
